Overtime I've developed an aversion towards a certain Manhattan drug store that seems to be everywhere from Duane to Reade, and then suddenly in an instant - it all changed.
It's very similar to how I feel about the sneakers (not to be confused with fashion sneakers), and the Birkenstock/Teva/camp sandals trend, that tromped down spring runways - proving they aren't going anywhere. The aversion I've built up against all previously mentioned newly popular options, has been building up throughout my entire life, rather than just every time I pass a Duane or quickly contemplate Reade. I KNOW - how have I been disliking a trend before it even became such? Let me let you in on a secret - my mother missed her calling as a fashion forecaster. Not only did she give me her vintage unicorn emblazoned overalls last Spring, but she has been wearing sneakers with ordinary outfits for as long as I can remember. She is also Birkenstock enthusiast, and has been rocking those for just as long. Throughout my youth I was so against both options; I thought they were masculine and not in a good way, they were down right dopey and didn't make any sense to me. Why ruin an otherwise vogue outfit with something you would wear to the gym or on a nature walk?
Then out of no where, Eva Chen, Jane Aldridge, and Leandra Medine - all whose style I admire, started posting New Balance, Nike or 'which Birkenstocks should I get?' - further furthering these trends. That's like discovering that Duane Reade carries your favorite brand of rice pudding that you would otherwise have to go all the way to NoLita to get. If you're not picking up what I'm putting down - it's mentally conflicting wanting to like something that you really loathed in the past. While I took the plunge and purchased the pudding, will I wear the shoes?
(from left to right) Marni Fussbett, Adidas Phantom - I actually really love the dark teal suede on these, Birkenstock white double strap, Marni calfskin sandal, Birkenstock Arizona, Adidas By Stella McCartney 'dorifera Feather', New Balance Kids 574 - sorry I forgot not everyone has been the same size shoe since they were twelve, Nike Free Run, Teva Mush Universal - speaking of when we were twelve I wore these to Zoo Camp at that age too, Marni Patent Fussbett. (Also CC: Rihanna & Ne-Yo)
